Nursing weekend - Phillip Island

14/9/2014

The nurses get together for a regular weekend away.  Every now and again they invite the hubbies.  This weekend was expertly arranged for a great house down on Phillip Island.

We headed down on Friday and returned on Monday.  What a great weekend.  We had the obligatory long walk on Saturday morning adequately interrupted by a coffee break (and Anzac bickie).  Then we headed for the Nobbies, an art gallery and finished of with a tour of the Chocolate factory.

Saturday night was an organised murder mystery - Judy was the murdering cocktail waitress.

Having wandered the Nobbies, looked out over Seal Island and watching the Blowhole perform we decided to take the boat cruise out there on Sunday.

Great call.  It was fantastic.  See the photos below.

Ian's adventure - Part 2

7/9/2014

6th September.
As you remember from a the story below Ian has taken on the bike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats.  He has struggled to get internet access from the wild moors of Scotland but has managed to find a traditional desktop in his San Francisco hotel to provide an overdue update on my travel.

The south-north UK cycling adventure was finally completed. What a journey! Recommend it highly for anyone inclined and not shy of wearing lycra. The 100 kilometre daily trek can be done by most - just allocate the right number of days -preferably with a rest or two along the way. We arrived at John O'Groats in one piece apart from our eldest team member suffering an unfortunate cardiac issue one day in Scotland. He is recovering in Glasgow hospital fortunately; creditable courageous effort from any 75 year-old.

Picture
The 3+week program was studded with fantastic challenges in terrain, landscape, people, villages, culture, B&B/hotels, fellow adventurers, isolation, natural & cultural treats. Found some pesky weasels amongst the wild scottish heather both amusing and stimulating - funny what extended time from 'civilisation' can do to the mind.  Anyway, happy to provide more details to any interests for future purposes.

Said goodbye to my cycle friends at heathrow then flew to US where spent a few days at Vegas and now San Francisco. The day at Grand Canyon western rim near the Indian based sky walk was a highlight, as was the baby boomer fired 'tribute to bee gees' show at Vegas.

Last day before meeting Jenny at Vancouver tomorrow - it's been a long time playing free-spirited backpacker! Then we do the Rocky Mountaineer train to Banff before road trip down to Montana meeting friends from the Peninsula. It's then off to Juneau in Alaska for an inside passage small boat trip down to Seattle. I'll try to provide a travel instalment along the way.

Off to cycle over the Golden Gate Bridge.

Go the Hawks (my Dees are for future reference)

Woodlands centenary

I had the opportunity to accompany dad to a special luncheon at Woolands Golf Club.  The celebration was the start of the 2nd century for Woolands (sounds like an excuse for a fund raiser!).

They gave out medallions to the long serving members.  As you can see (circled) dad got his medallion for 40+ years as member of Woodlands. Ern has been a member there for 47 years, staring when he was 45.  He has a little yet to go with the longest serving member, who was at the luncheon, now up to 74 years.

Hello lads & lassies. We have managed another week north to now reach Moffat over into  Scotland.  It has been a fascinating time moving from England up the Welsh border then up and over the Yorkshire moors in strong cross-winds. Exposed heather-clad fells with steep climbs, nervous descents, weasel, partridges and almost snow!  Bikes and bodies still together with very welcome baths each night at pubs or B&b's. A welcome rest day tomorrow  before re-commencing the normal 90-100 km. Daily ride. Trying local fayre and drinks each stop so over to an ale n pie for dinner with numerous dogs around us in the Scottish public. More next week when closer to the finish line at john o'groups. Cheers Ian

5th August
Here I am in london about to embark on a three and half week cycling adventure from lands end cornwall to john o'grouts at the top of Scotland.   Five participants with backup , this 1600 km. ( 1000 mile) trip will test us both physically as well as behaviorally - staying in pubs , b & bs, checking heritage sites and generally having a great time.  I hope to provide weekly updates so cheers from over here. Ian stevenson.

Hello tipsters downunder. My team of six aussies are now five days into our cycle adventure from lands end to john o'grouts at top of Scotland.  Today's rest day in Chepstow wales is a welcome reprieve from some challenging times across hilly slopes in Cornwall and devon.  Fabulous landscapes ,  quaint country lanes, pubs etc. Hit storms over the river Severn bridge yesterday - a 3.2 km stretch before reaching wales.  Body and bike still functioning so 18 more days may be achievable!  Hope to provide updates as we move north up the welsh border region over the next week. We've turned the corner.  Cheers ian

Grampians

We have never been to the Grampians but are now converted.  What a spectacular place.
The rock material that composes the high peaks is sandstone which was laid down from rivers during the Devonian period 380 million years ago. This sediment slowly accumulated to a depth of 7 km; this was later raised and tilted for its present form.

Marg picked up a luxury escape at wonderful accommodation in Halls Gap.  Log fire, spa bath, a bottle of bubbly on arrival and king size bed was a great way to spend a couple of nights
Picture
Not only is the scenery amazing but we also found (not hard given the tourist information available) the sandstone quarry where the material for Victoria's Parliament House, GPO and State Library were sourced.  The former Mt Difficult quarry was once one of the most important stone sites in Victoria, famous for its high yield of Grampians Freestone.  Extraction is now only permitted for repairs.
The trip through the northern half of the Grampians is enhanced by the aftermath of the horrific fires in January 2014. From this event the scenery is now even more spectacular as you get to see the sandstone cliffs through blackened trees and the many stream that run through the area that would be hidden from view by foliage.  The place seems to be starting to come alive again.  The amazing part was some ferns and blackboys that seem to remain untouched by the fire.

Walking France and Italy

2/8/2014

Judi Lawler is in France and Italy for a month.   One of her friends is walking the whole pilgrim route from Holland to the Spanish coast past Santiago on the west coast – 4 months constant walking!  Jude is joining her for a week at Perigueux (where the Tour de France finished in the south of France before flying to Paris).   They do between 20 – 30 k per day, staying at gits or refuges (there are lots along the pilgrim trails).   Jude then flies to Geneva, trains to Mount Blanc and joins 7 other girlfriends for a 10 day walk around Mt Blanc  (It’s called “the Walk of Mount Blanc”). Then train to the Cinque Terre in Italy, and they all walk that too!

Picture
The photo of Jude is…”…all packed and practicing for the take off”.   The other is the 8 of them about to board the airport bus in Echuca (driven by Tony) for the trip to Tulla.   We just made it out of Echuca before the cork came out of the first bubbles.

You can follow her travels on facebook or http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/judilawler/1/1406261066/tpod.html

Winter is here

We have all got our stories of the foul weather that has been lashing the southeast corner of Australia.   I have assembled a few images captured during the week.
Perhaps this short video looks credible for Melbourne
Melbourne provided lots of images of rough weather

Certainly Canberra has chiiled out a bit

And we even collected a bit of our own footage in a trip down to Half Moon Bay with dad.  Many who grew up around Cheltenham/ Beaumaris would recognise the beautiful little bay where the Cerebus sits out in the water off shore.  Well on Saturday this little bay was more like a washing machine.

The Philippines

Seems that the islands around the Phillipines present a sensational view of pristine country and crystal clear waters.  As you could imagine Marg is making the most of a few days there with Steph.  The weekend is being spent in Bohol.  Bohol is in central Philippines and just north of Mindanou.  It suffered from a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in 2013 that left 154 dead.  Check out some of the photos.

Steph celebrates her birthday while in Manila.  Out on the town with work colleagues.

Then Steph and friends chill out in the Manila Ice Bar.  Would seem to be a very popular place.

And now a few shots from a weekend a couple of hours from Manila
