Successful day at Brighton

31/10/2010

As pointed out the attached news article, Steph's Family Life Open Garden Day was planned for 6 gardens in Brighton.

The day was spectacular in weather.  Marg & I started at Secombe Grove, the property next to Brighton Yacht Club with the beach as a backyard.  This is owned by Patricia Ilhan of Crazy Johns fame.  After coffee and scones we wandered for several kilometers around Brighton, visiting 6 great gardens and enjoying a spectacular 4 hours with heaps of others.

Steph tells me that they made heaps of money.  Well done.

FAMILY LIFE

GARDEN
Tomorrow is your chance to check out all the beautiful gardens around Brighton. It's very important to pronounce Brighton as ``Brahh-tin'' and only use the lower part of your jaw. Six unique gardens are on show this year, from rambling treasure-troves and Victorian manors through to modern abodes with breathtaking views. The addresses are as follows: 1 Wellington Street, 26 Grosvenor Street, 19 Seacombe Grove, 2A Seacombe Grove, 285 New Street and 27 Victoria Street Brahh-tin. Now in its ninth consecutive year, this fundraising event is run by a team of dedicated volunteers with all money raised going to Family Life, a local non profit community organisation that provides services such as counselling, support groups, training and community development in the Southern Metropolitan region of Melbourne. Guests can also enjoy the thrill of a ride in a vintage car with a 1923 Rolls-Royce, 20 Horse Power Tourer, a 1924 Dodge 4 Tourer and a 1936 Studebaker Commander from garden to garden. Visitors can also enjoy music provided by local school students, some fun activities for the kids and useful information from major event sponsors CopperRock, Victorian Lawn Installations and CityWide Services. One more time, ``See you in Brahh-tin, luvvy.''

I provided some insight to our mobility in showing a chart at the Grand Final showing where I had received tips from during the year.  Thought I should record this here.

2nd stop - Vancouver

Picture
Steph and Kristy are comtemplating the footy finals from Kristy's apartment in downtown Vancouver.  It appears that Steph is happy to be able to walk around on relatively flat ground after the hills of San Francisco.
Kristy and Steph are about to embark on the next part of their journey to Chicago, via Seattle and then on to New York where they are meeting up with Kate and our three tipsters can make their picks for the Grand Final from the middle of Time Square.

Hi guys,
So I've made it...what a flight! Forgot how horrible such long flights are, barely slept a wink, but still going, trying not to yawn too much :)

I've had a great day, bought a bus pass which will get me around on the tourist buses for the next few days which is good. The hostel I'm in is in a good spot near union sq, near all the shops! So needless to say I've already been shopping...think I might need a new bag quicker than I thought hehe. Also went to fishermans wharf today and was able to see Alcatraz despite the fog. Then made my way back via little Italy and Chinatown, both very cool and quite different. Lots of little pockets around the place which is cool. And went to the 'krookedist' st in the world...very funny!

Met a nice girl in my room and we're just looking up a place she knows to go to tonight. Part of me just wants to crawl into bed but figure I should make the most of it!

Free wifi in the hostel so easy to email u! I'll let you know how my day goes tomorrow...plan to go across the golden gate bridge and have a look at some of the nice parks. Weather suppose to be improving, bit chillier here than i thought, but still nicer than melbourne!

Hope your surviving the wind and rain and are having a nice fathers day dad.

The Schirmann's at Calgary Stampede again

News from Calgary

The past few months have been very busy for us and I am only now catching up on all the photos.

Our vacation in Santorini in June was great – the photos attached provide some idea of the visual spectacular that it is . . . really doesn’t quite capture the panorama and atmosphere of Oia where we stayed.  It’s a lovely place for a great vacation!.

Joanna visited in July for the Calgary Stampede and it was wonderful to see her again – attached are a few photos of us in our Stampede gear.  We also took Joanna to the Columbia Icefields, which are near Lake Louise and feature a huge glacier that is 300 metres thick in places.  We had a very special time together and were naturally sorry to see her return to Perth.

Lastly, we have a new addition to the family.  Last year we lost one of our two Poodles – Lucy, and were down to Bella.  We’re sure Bella enjoyed being the centre of attention but we had become used to having a pair so started looking earlier this year.  After much searching, we found a Poodle breeder in nearby Bragg Creek and now have a 10 week old white Poodle puppy.  She is called Suzie and is cute as can be.

Hope all is going well for you and Marg.

Cheers, Adrian.

High Tea
Dad and Jan invited Marg & I to join them in a "high tea" at Rupertswood on Sunday.  You needed a step ladder to get to the sweet cakes at the top of the table while many champers slipped down smoothly.

A great way to spend Sunday afternoon.

PRETENDING TO BE VALENTINO ROSSI

Brought to you by Tony Lawler.

Tony on the red and silver Suzuki at Winton Raceway.  According to reports we are talking 0 to 100 in 3.4 secs.  What could possess someone in their late 50's to take on this sort of fun!  Read on to find out.

Well I have now done 5 track days on the Suzuki and the learning curve has been HUGE.   I am now moving up to more advanced riding groups and with this comes more “ Oh Shit” moments.  With your helmet on you’re pretty well in a cocoon in your own little world, listening to the sounds of your bike and the general hubbub from the track.         Race bikes have practically no muffler in the exhaust so they can sound like a 747 jet when at 13,000 revs.   They have no mirrors, no lights, no stop light, no horn and practically no seat.

So………… track day at Broadford the other day ....... you know, 215 down the back straight tucked in behind the screen, right angle corner coming up, sit up, set up body position on bike, brake to 110, change gear, hang off bike and knee down, grip tank with elbows, lean, scrape knee, and OH SHIT some lunatic passes you on the inside ..............it seems like his rear wheel is level with your head as you look down and his exhaust pipe is pointed straight at your face,  2 metres away and screaming like a jet!     Then his mate circles round the outside and you have 2 jet engines blaring in your ears............  hang on, watch the corner and try and stick with them through the esses.

Wouldn’t miss it for quids.

Tea for the Tillerman - a birthday treat

27/6/2010

Marg took me along to Wild World – The Cat Stevens Story for my birthday. This was a fabulous way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

From humble beginnings as a teenager growing up in London's West End to his rise as a teen star, Wild World – The Cat Stevens Story took us on a spoken word and musical journey through Cat Stevens' battle with tuberculosis at just 19, his resulting discovery of spirituality and a near death experience drowning.

Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Cat Stevens, both physically and vocally, London-born Paul Dillon, tells the incredible story from the 60’s & 70’s. From Cat’s teenage years, a tear-away at school, followed by his first song-writing contract at 17, to his first recording contract at 18 and all the way through to his current lifestyle and change of name. When in the late 70s the cult legend suddenly abandoned his musical career after a short decade of celebrated global success.

We heard the unforgettable songs of Cat Stevens, performed by Paul and accompanied by his band, The Tillermen, and shared the emotion of this fabulous songwriter’s amazing story. It’s all set to the soundtrack of the amazing life performance of over 20 unforgettable songs like: ‘Moonshadow’, ‘Peace Train’, ‘Wild World’, ‘Where Do the Children Play?’, ‘So Very Young’, ‘Morning Has Broken’, ‘Father and Son’ and many more…

A great birthday treat.
